Panjat Pinang! (or Climb the Palm Tree!) is a game where a group of people/kids have to lift each other up a slippery palm/bamboo to reach presents/goodies tied to the top of the pole.This game is traditionally held during the Independence Day celebration.

How can I resist this? First, the 3 minute cupcake and now THIS. I’m set for life. Snackwise.

This recipe was sent to me by Sue, Jonathan’s mom. I thought some of you would like to give it a try :-)

Ingredients :

2 cups hazelnuts, skinned and toasted
1/3 cup dark cocoa powder
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoon hazelnut, peanut, or vegetable oil

1. Spread hazelnuts on a baking sheet and toast at 450F until the skins are
dark but not burned. Remove them and let cool for five minutes, then rub
them with a dishtowel to remove the skins. (Skins will cause a bitter taste,
so try to remove as much as possible…)

2. Blend hazelnuts in a food processor for 4-5 minutes. Nuts will go through
several stages - dry, to wet and clumped, to a final smooth consistency once
the nuts have released all of their oils.

3. Add and continue to blend until incorporated: cocoa powder, powdered
sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Check flavor. Sugar and cocoa powder
amounts may be somewhat modified to suit your taste and sweetness
preferences.

4. Add oil and mix until smooth. Keeps covered in the refrigerator for up to
two months.

Every month I go to Frank’s to get my haircut. I’ve been patronizing this barbershop for more than two years now eversince I came to Adelaide. The reason why I like Frank is because I think the old man is uber cool. Imagine an old fashioned Italian barber, who plays opera in the background, holding a shaving knife near your throat. For 15 minutes, I was a Mafia Don.

Today he told me of his trip to Bali and how much he loves the place. And and at some point in our conversation, we started talking about religion. Because I surprise him with my knowledge of Ramayana while I am a Muslim. After much talk about how all the religions have so many things in common, and how it has been misused for thousands of years, we came to the topic of Abraham. Frank blames Abraham for being too nice to his wife. “Typical woman,” he says. First wife could not have kids, told husband to mary a younger woman. 2nd wife gave birth, 1st wife got jealous. 1st wife eventually got pregnant, could not stand living with 2nd wife. Husband had to send 2nd wife away. From 1st wife came the Jews & Christians, and from the 2nd, the Muslims. And until now, Abraham’s children could not get along. “That’s why I blame Abraham, he started it all.”

Ah, Frank, I wish my hair could grow faster.

She woke up me at 2am asking, “are you awake?”. I said yes.

Her laptop was still on, for the whole week she’s been checking her emails and our mailbox patiently for the results.

“I got accepted at Flinders.” Which is where we all wanted her to be, where all of her closest friends are, the nearest hospital to where we live, where her younger sister is currently studying, where she feels the most comfortable. Against the not-so-good odds, as an international student, her Australian couterparts would always get the 1st choice, she got accepted into her prefered hospital. I was afraid that she might get posted to somewhere really far or rural, we might have to rethink our living arrangement.

Alhamdulillah. We hugged. “I never thought these things would happen to me,” she said about getting her first choice. “I pray for this everyday.”

Well baby, that’s exactly why you get it. :)

3 Minute Microwave Chocolate Cupcake

This one’s for my own archive. Possibly the most important recipe I’ve ever learnt.

Source: CoffeandVanilla

6 tbs plain flour
½ tsp baking powder
6 tbs golden caster sugar
4 tbs cocoa powder
2 eggs
4 tbs Carotino or other neutral oil
4 tbs milk or coconut milk

dusting sugar, ice cream, custard or some sauce / syrup to serve

EQUIPMENT

2 medium wide cappuccino cups
spoon
microwave

METHOD

Combine all ingredients together, share into two cups, place for about 3 minutes on full power in 800W microwave.

Serve dusted with icing sugar or even better with some sauce, custard or ice cream on a side as the cake is a little bit dry.

If you are making only one cup use half of the ingredients and stir everything directly in the cup you were using for microwaving. Shorten the time to about 2 minutes.
There lot of recipes online for microwave cupcakes, but you may want to check one on Dizzy Dee website with step by step picture instructions: Chocolate Cake In 5 Minutes.

Today, I was walking to the carpark at Flinders Uni. A lady who was walking in front of me suddenly stopped. She was admiring a colourful little bird on the roadside. How can we truly live life without noticing these things?

- Yesterday was my Birthday (27 years old, Indonesian). I got Cranium from my wife (A Singaporean), Scrubs Season 1 DVD from Sasa (also), and a Dell Mini 9 for myself :). Spent the night @ Somi ( A pakistani) & Rushdi’s (A south African) apartment eating chocolate mud cake and playing Cranium till 3am. Also met up with Aamer (A Bangaldeshi) & Qamar (A Somali). Hanging out with Aamer always makes me feel ‘Cool’ to be an ethnic minority.
